Schisandra Berry
Another Super Fruit
Schisandra chinensis is known as a fruit bearing vine with purple-red berries that people have described as having all five tastes; sweet, salt, bitter, pungent and sour. Science has discovered that Schisandra chinensis seeds contain lingnans, which are “a group of substances found in plants that have shown estrogenic and anticancer effects. Lignans have been used in some cultures to treat certain medical problems”(1). TCM considers Schisandra to be great for replenishing life-force energy having a positive impact on the body via heart, kidney and lungs. Research shows that Schisandra is beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson disease because of its ability to block formation of excess amyloid beta peptides in the brain. Another study was done on the pollen extracted from the Schisandra which showed strong antioxidant effects alleviating the effects of toxic damage to the liver, making it great for people with both acute and chronic hepatitis.
